Granite-1. Coming into Granite from The West, The road over from Olive Lake.

Granite is a little out of the way place that just got phone service in 2000. It was known for the gold mining in the area in the 1890's Now it is a place to get away from it all. There are a lot of existing Gold claims in the area yet. Some working, Some not.

Granite-2 Going into Granite.

Granite is a mix of old and some new. Some of the buildings are original, Some have been rebuilt because of fire, age, ect. and some are new to the area via the newcomers to the area.

Granite-3. This was a renovated building. I think that it was the schoolhouse.

The building has Electricity, and probably had it around the turn of the century [1900]from the Fremont powerhouse that supplied electricity for the big bucketline dredges that went through the area from around1900 till 1956 when the last one shut down near Sumpter Oregon.

Granite-4 Prime Real Estate!

This was the old Dance Hall/Brothel/Saloon in Granite. It is now for sale. It looks like it may be one of the original buildings here. Looking at the size of it I wondered how all the movie saloons got so big.

Greenhorn-1. Here we are in the center of Greenhorn.

Greenhorn was originaly on Greenhorn Mountain at about the 8000 ft level but after the first winter there they moved it to the 6800 ft level where it is now. It was the higest recorded Post Office in the U.S.

Greenhorn-3. This is Mark, My Partner,[and Nephew.] By an old cabin

This is one of the old original prospectors cabins on the edge of Greenhorn.We tried a pan from the little creek in back of this cabin and we found color. Not much but it is there.

Greenhorn-4. The main street.

This is the main street of Greenhorn and it is a good road.[compared to some we have been on.] and these are some of the old buildings that are still standing. There is some new building going on here but it is for the summer folks that want a getaway.

Greenhorn is a town that refused to die when the miners left. this is an older cabin probably from the 30's the older ones have dissappeared. There is a bit of new building going on here though and it is in the higher dollar get-aways.
