Start of the road going up Canyon Mtn. Old miners shack. The road here was good and deteriorated from there.
This old shack was last used we think in the 1940's We know some of the Claim holders here and that is what they told us. We were on our way to some patented property that is steeped in Gold history and some of its Gold is on display in the Baker Bank.

A Glory hole a little ways past the shack. Canyon Mtn is covered with them.
This one was open and not to bad. Most look pretty rough and have not been entered in over 50 years. There are a few prospects going on yet but no major finds recently. This mountain is on the East side of Canyon Creek, Which many folks think is the site of the original Blue Bucket Mine.

About one third of the way up Canyon Mtn. Old Hydraulic diggings
The area of Little Canyon Mtn was worked up untill WW 2 shut everything down. Some were good prospects and payed and some never made good, but the chance of hitting it big is still there.

Old Hydraulic area.
The Hydraulic area goes all the way down to Prarie city and is very extensive. It would be fun to take todays technology in and play around.

Near the end of the road.
We are near the end of the road here and it is in an area that I remember going to in 1947 or 48. It sure looked different then. The old cabin is now gone and I think it is a working area or at least has been worked within the last 20 years. If you look close you can see my partner and nephew Mark hiking up the hill. The top is the top and goes down from there.

This is the west side of the Mtn.
As I said in the photo before, It is down from the top. That is where I am standing to get this photo. This is near the area that my Dad worked doing assessment work on claims in the area in the late 20's and 30's. I have a lot of stories and info about the area.

The left hand of the Y off Canyon Mountain.
We went down the left part of the Y and came to where the Strawberry Wilderness beguins. This is also where the Iron King mine is. This is a diggings just outside of the wilderness where we got some good crystals. The road further was blocked so we couldn't go any farther. This was and still is a very rich Chrome deposit. The federal Law about roads states that ANY ROAD IN USE PRIOR TO 1976 HAS TO BE KEPT OPEN. What happened? I guess we lost again.

End of road. Looking at Iron Mtn.
You can't see it but there is a road that goes up this Mtn.The Iron King Mine is up there.Blocked off by the Forest Service. Saved for the Sierra Club to fly over and say they saved it. What happens when it burns? do they add another million acres to replace it? just think , no roads to get in and fight the fire so they will just let it burn. Enough soapboxing, Hope you enjoyed the photo trip.
